All About Korean Movie Theaters
from Mary Myers;
Hey guys,
I've always thought seeing movies off-post is WAY more enjoyable than seeing them on-post so I thought I would make a little guide if you want to try it. The reason I like seeing movies out in Korea is because the seats are much more comfortable, people are generally much quieter and more polite during the movie, and there is assigned seating which is very convenient.
You can find most of the movie times by googling around your area. Almost all of the theaters will have 2 or 3 English movies playing, although they tend to get released later here than they do in America. New movies normally come out on Wednesday instead of Friday. The movies will be in English but there are Korean subtitles throughout. This has actually helped me with learning to read some Korean!
To buy tickets, you will have to take a number out of a ticketing machine and wait your turn. The numbers are displayed at the cashiers, so when your number is up just bring your ticket to the cashier. The movie names are the same so it shouldn't be difficult to be understood. Then there will be a display of the seating on a monitor and you pick which seats you want. The seat numbers will be printed out on your ticket.
Because of the assigned seating, the ushers will usually not let people into the theater until about 10-15 minutes before the movie starts. Korean movies have previews and commercials before them just like back home. Sometimes there are previews for English movies but they're usually voiced over in Korean.
Koreans are very quiet during the movie so if you're being loud you might get some dirty looks or told to stop talking. This is fine with me because I hate it when people talk during a movie! However, texting on the cell phone is quite common, although I don't do it. Also I rarely see children at movies, I'm sure it's ok to do it but personally I would make sure they are old enough to be still and quiet during the movie to avoid irritating anyone else.
Happy moviegoing! I hope you try out a Korean theater at least once. I love it and refuse to see movies on post now. =)

Re: All About Korean Movie Theaters
From Mary Myers;
For anyone at Camp Humphreys, the easiest theater to get to is in Pyeongtaek Station on the 8th floor.
Here is a website to see the movie times for the Pyeongtaek theater: https://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fmovies%3Fhl%3Den%26near%3Dpyeongtaek%2Bkorea%26ei%3D9K54S5rKAo3-sgPQ5snLCA%26tid%3Dd92f02a9f0945d78&h=2bcffadcab7820f47c5bbffd1a28cd27
The English movies are noted but the titles are in Hanguel. I can translate if anyone needs help
